POKHARA, Feb 8: A team of 10 Nepali mountaineers, who scaled Mount K2 on January 16 earlier this year setting a record as the first team to conquer the second tallest peak in the world in winter, received a warm welcome in the tourist city of Pokhara on Monday.

The K2 conquerors, who arrived in Pokhara  by air, were taken around the city. The Pokhara Tourism Council (PTC) organized the program in their honor.

Sushil Poudel, the coordinator of today’s program, said the summiteers have glorified the identity of Nepal and Nepalis. “They are the heroes of the mountain,” he added.

The Nepali climbers comprising Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Nirmal Purja Magar, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Kilu Pemba Sherpa, Dawa Tenzing Sherpa, and Sona Sherpa had reached the top of the 8,611-meter high mountain at the same moment. All ten climbers stopped 30-feet below the summit on a relatively safe spot and reached the mountaintop together in a sign of solidarity.
